Orion Nebula

This painting draws its inspiration from a Hubble telescope picture of the Orion Nebula. While I was painting it I was listening to some tapes of essays and speeches by Steven Hawking. I added word and phrases from the tapes with gold ink. Although I don't understand a lot of physics and mathematics, I am so thankful for the people who do. They have made it possible for me to see farther into the universe as I search for that place where science, religion and art all come together.

Seasons

Seasons of Life is the idea behind this picture. The acrylic backrounds symbolize the seasons. Pink for the Spring of babyhood. Green for the Summer of teenage. Orange stands for the Autumn of middle age and gray for the coming Winter of old age. The name of the person is being withheld to prevent the guilty from stealing her identity.

Earth, Air, Water, Fire

One warm Spring day I saw vapor trails that appeared to be sewing fluffy clouds to the sky. This fabric collage is my attempt to represent that moment in time. The Earth, Air, Water (vapor) are apparent, but the
Fire of the jet engines is only a line of memory drawn on the sky.

Landscape

Torn paper, in various shades of greys and greens, was glued to watercolor paper
and then attached to the canvas. Acrylic paint was used to adjust some of
the shades and brass foil flakes were added in the forground. The crease
and torn edge add texture and remind us that this is a collage and
not a painting.

Ocean

This "Ocean" picure was painted with acrilic paint on plywood. The sand was
added with gritty medium. Some of the shells were glued on with medium.
Several of the shells, however, were drilled, wired and attached to a chain bracelet which
is hung on tiny hooks. The bracelet can be removed and worn as desired.
How's that for a gift from the sea?

Inside my Cabinet of Curiosity

Most of he items in my Cabinet of Curiosity came from my stash of junk acquired
from the Goodwill "bins." Oops, I seem to have cut off the top part in my photo.
If I had thought things out a bit better I would have loaded this picture onto
the blog after I loaded the picture of the front of the cigar box. It might make
more sense to the viewers.

Keys to Cabinet of Curiosity

My cabinet of curiosity is a cigar box in which I drilled small holes and wired on old keys. Two

of the keys function as a door latch. I added a painted board behind the box to extend the dimensions to 8"X8" and to attach a hanging device.

Amphibians

A quilt square pieced on a muslin foundation was mounted on a stretched canvas with matte
medium. A transparency printed from my sketch of frogs was attached using my old Camp Fire Girls honor beads. I nailed through the beads and into the stretcher frame. The beads do not appear in this picture because the computer scan was done before this last step so that the picture would lie flat on the scanner. The final product looks just a bit different.

Fauna?

This dragon is one type of fauna on Og. Og is the mythical planet which exists
only in my mind but shows up frequently in my artwork. When my Red Hat
group chose fanciful names, I ended up as Empress of Og and have enjoyed
"picturing" Og ever since.

Flora challenge

We're in the middle of remodeling our kitchen.I had a friend cut some pieces of the old birchplywood cabinet doors to use in this 8" x 8" challenge. It was heartbreaking to see so much of the great old wood go into the dumpster to be replaced with particle board and veneer.

My "Flora" piece began wilth previously prepared paper with a circle of free-form"iris folding." The petals were formed from old postcards and the whole thing was attached to the birch board with gel medium. I used my new digital camera to take the picture and I learned to get the photo out of my camera and upload it to Nature Gathered for the first time (mostly) by myself.

Parasite

This piece came about from experimental "blob" printing with art paste.. After printing this shape on ledger paper, I cut out the human form. The background is gold foil and acrylic paint. I find the image of the large parasite clinging to the human form to be really humorous and not as scary as a picture of a "real" bug. Have I been reading too much science fiction?

Nest with a View

Birds have never been a theme in my work, probably because I can't draw them correctly. When the theme of birds was chosen for the challlenge I wonderedif it was possible to use the theme without using an actual bird. That is where the idea for "Nest with a View" came from.

It is painted with acrylic with several layers of under painting. If I were to do it again, I would raise the postition of the nest, so that it felt more "up in the air." This compostiton makes it look as if it is a ground nest which was not my intention. I meant to capture the view the bird would see from her nest in the tree. Oh, well, on to the next piece.

Hello from Judi

I was lost but now am "found!" I forgot the name of the blog site and
could not get back here. Now I found you and feel a lot better about
this swap and computers and life in general. I was beginning to think
I was having dementia. I did get my July 8 x 8 finished.
Are we to upload a of it here? If you have any tips on how
